səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation) Shoreline Adaptation

The səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation) is leading the protection and restoration of approximately 500 metres of reserve shoreline along the north shore of Burrard Inlet. The project responds to ongoing erosion, sea-level rise and habitat degradation while protecting culturally significant archaeological sites and critical community infrastructure.

As part of the multidisciplinary consultant team led by Westmar Advisors, PWL contributed landscape architecture and nature-based design expertise to the development of shoreline solutions informed by Indigenous knowledge, ecological processes and technical analysis. The work explores opportunities to strengthen coastal resilience while restoring marine and intertidal habitat and supporting the Nation’s cultural and ecological values.

The project reflects the Nation’s longstanding relationship with Burrard Inlet and commitment to the stewardship of these lands and waters. By bringing together cultural, ecological and technical knowledge, the work aims to restore shoreline function and biodiversity while responding to increasing pressures from storms, sea-level rise, marine activity and other changes within the inlet.
