Kʷasən Village
Kʷasən Village is a 40-acre Indigenous master planned community in Burnaby that brings together housing, employment, parks and open space, creek daylighting, and cultural presence on lands shaped through partnership with Musqueam Indian Band, Tsleil-Waututh Nation and Aquilini Development.
Developed through a collaborative planning process, the project reflects a shared vision for a mixed-use community that supports long-term economic opportunity, including a major film studio, alongside new housing and public spaces. The Nations have played a central role in shaping the direction of the project, ensuring that development reflects their priorities, values, and connection to the land.
Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, PWL contributed to the master planning and rezoning of the site, shaping the parks, open space framework, public realm, and streetscape network. The landscape is structured to support a connected and walkable community, linking homes, workplaces, and gathering spaces through a cohesive system of parks and streets.
Public spaces are designed to support daily life as well as cultural visibility, creating places for gathering, movement, and community use. The integration of landscape and urban structure strengthens social connection while supporting a community that can grow and evolve over time. Significant to the site and the Nations reconnecting to the land will be the partial daylighting of Sumner Creek which is part of the Still Creek Watershed.
